About any-potty

any-potty is an info punk project: it brings together available, open and abandoned databases and repos into one free reference tool for queer, trans and disabled folks to find accessible restrooms.

It shows the nearest restrooms to you, and what's known about each: whether it's all-gender, whether it's accessible, and a door code when someone has shared one. This is an early alpha.

Where the data comes from

any-potty stands on the shoulders of earlier community projects:

  • Safe2Pee, the original crowd-sourced map of gender neutral and safe restrooms. It's gone now, but its database lives on.
  • Refuge Restrooms (open source on GitHub) was made to fill the gap Safe2Pee left. Its first 4,500 entries came from the old Safe2Pee database; the rest were added by its users. Most of the all-gender restrooms here come from Refuge, and any-potty builds on it.

Alongside that:

  • People using any-potty add restrooms, update what they know and flag listings that are wrong.
  • OpenStreetMap: public toilets mapped by volunteers.
  • The City of San Francisco (DataSF): city restrooms, with hours.

Privacy

  • Your location is only used to sort the list. It's sent with the request and never saved.
  • Accounts use passkeys (Face ID, Touch ID or your device's lock). No email, no password.
  • Updates show the display name you pick, or "Someone".

Community rules

  • Be kind. No harassment, in notes or anywhere else.
  • No private homes. Only places anyone can use, or customers can.
  • Share door codes only for places that give them to customers. Codes show only to people who are signed in.

Data and licences

Restrooms and updates people add here are shared under the Open Database License (ODbL). Refuge Restrooms data from refugerestrooms.org (its code is AGPL-3.0). Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). Map tiles by OpenFreeMap. City data from DataSF.

If you lose your phone

Passkeys sync through iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, so a new phone usually keeps your account. If every device is lost, make a new account; what you added stays.
